Apr 25, 2014. #10. 5 seconds would feel like an eternity, there's no way anyone would tolerate it. If you are really experiencing 5 seconds of hesitation it means there's something seriously wrong with your car. 1 second of turbo lag is very noticeable and does not feel anything like normal.

I am about 3 weeks into converting my 1977 Jeep CJ-7 from a 304 V8 (approx. 10 - 12 mpg) to a 1.9 TDI out of my now scrapped 1998 Jetta. I am using an AX15 trans, Dana 300 T-case, Ford 8.8 Disc Reareand with 3.73 gears and a D30 front end w/ discs.
It'll likely be cheaper and easier to just pick up a tdi. You mention that your current car is a known entity, but once you start hacking on a turbo kit etc that ceases to be the case. The money you save will either go towards fixing any minor issues on a tdi, or just buying a better one in the first place.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that ALH and AGR are the same engine except for turbo, AGR has a wastegated turbo and the ALH a VNT-turbo., and maybe different injector nozzles or software?
