There are two portions of the Danube River: the upper Danube, which flows through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary; and the lower Danube, which travels southeast from Hungary and flows through the Balkan states. The most popular routes take passengers from Nuremberg to Budapest (or from Budapest to Nuremberg) along the upper Danube.
Joseph II tried to make the Danube more attractive for navigation and to introduce regular shipping services between Vienna and Constantinople. He did manage to push through the right of free navigation on the Danube and the Black Sea in 1784, and transport costs would have been significantly lower than by land or by sea via Trieste. ca.
